Taking care of your custom-made mattress

by | Jun 18, 2019 | Mattresses

If you’ve made the investment in a custom-made mattress, then it simply makes sense to spend a bit of time and effort to ensure it’s well maintained. The better care your mattress receives the longer it will last.

Rotate and flip can help prolong the life of your mattress

Any mattress which is used every day will eventually take the shape of the body. Once a mattress loses its shape it will no longer support you correctly and will become uncomfortable. A new mattress should be rotated from end-to-end around every three months. Regular rotating provides uniform wear to each side of the mattress prolonging the life of your mattress.

If you have a double-sided mattress, you can also flip the mattress over as well as rotating it, further distributing the wear and tear on the mattress.

The handles on the side of a mattress are there to help rotate and position the mattress, they are not there to lift and carry the mattress.

Mattress protector

A mattress protector can serve two purposes. As well as protecting the mattress from wear and tear, it can also protect the sleeper from allergens and irritants such as dust mites, bed bugs, mould and dead skin.

Everybody perspires while they sleep. An unprotected mattress can become marked or stained quite quickly as sweat produced throughout the night is absorbed by the mattress. A protector prevents or minimises the impact and staining from sweat and other contaminants.

Mattress protectors are highly recommended for individuals who are susceptible to allergies and dust mites. Dust mites produce waste products that irritate the lining of the airways and lungs and can bring on allergic reactions such as asthma.

Regular cleaning

It’s important to keep your mattress dry, so you need to be careful if your need to clean a spill or stain from your mattress. Vacuuming is the most effective means of cleaning your mattress. Using the upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner, work your way down from one end of your mattress to the other with overlapping, narrow sweeping paths.

Sturdy bed frame

A quality bed frame will not only help maintain the life of your mattress but will also contribute to your sleeping comfort. A flimsy or broken bed frame will contribute to your mattress losing its shape and supportive properties. For those with an ensemble, an old or sagging base should be replaced. If the base has casters, they will need to checked and tightened if loose, every 12 months.

Proper care of your mattress will ensure the longevity and level of comfort provided by your mattress.
