A new mattress may help a sore back

Feb 13, 2019

Sleeping on a poor quality mattress can lead to worsening back pain. It’s commonly assumed that to alleviate back pain sleeping on a very firm mattress is the answer. Recent research, however, indicates that this may not be the case.

Roughly 80% of adults will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, and for millions this is a chronic, lifelong condition.

A lumpy surface or a soft unsupportive mattress is likely to create and or escalate problems. There again, mattresses that are too stiff and firm may push against the spine. According to a US study on 313 patients suffering lower back pain, those using medium-firm mattresses reported less pain compared to those using firm mattresses.

It’s about having a mattress that is firm enough to support the lower back yet soft enough to contour to the shape of one’s body. Sleeping with a straight, natural back alignment can relieve the pressure associated with back pain.

Building a back friendly bed

A back friendly bed will allow the wider parts of the body, like the hips and shoulders to sink in, while the lighter parts stay atop of the mattress.

Memory foam has become a popular material in the construction of mattresses for people with back and joint problems. It’s a polyurethane material that is sensitive to pressure and temperature. The open cell structure of this material allows it to conform to the structure, shape and contours of a sleeper’s body.

A pocket spring mattress can also help maintain proper alignment of the spine. A pocket spring mattress is made of individual springs. Each spring is sewn into its own pocket of fabric. Each spring works independently, providing your body with better pressure relieving support.

A custom made mattress can combine these and other materials to create a bed tailored to you.

See a doctor first

If you are having problems with your back or joints and can’t sleep comfortably, we recommend seeing your doctor. You may be referred to a specialist depending on the nature of the ailment. They will recommend what you need in terms of firmness and support.
